For Immediate Release: Lighthouse Festival Accepting Script Submissions for 2026 Play Development Festival

Play Development Festival to be held from March 6 to 11, 2026

June 16, 2025 – Port Dover, ON | Lighthouse Festival is excited to announce the official call for submissions for the 2026 Play Development Festival, taking place March 6 to 11, 2026. Canadian playwrights from coast to coast are invited to submit their unproduced comedic works for the chance to be developed and showcased on Lighthouse’s mainstage.

Now entering its second year before the pandemic, the Play Development Festival is an integral part of Lighthouse’s commitment to supporting new Canadian voices in theatre. Submissions are open from June 1 to September 15, 2025, and selected playwrights will receive dramaturgical support, rehearsal time with professional artists, and a staged reading in front of a live audience who are invited to give feedback.

“We’re on the hunt for fresh, funny, and fearless storytelling,” says Jane Spence, Artistic Director of Lighthouse Festival. “Our audiences love to laugh, and this festival is an incredible opportunity for playwrights to develop their comedic voice in a supportive and collaborative environment.”

Playwrights are invited to submit unproduced, comedic two-act plays that run approximately 90 minutes in length. Scripts must require no more than six actors (though those actors may play multiple roles). If submitting a musical, scripts must be designed for a maximum of four performers. Plays that have not yet received a professional production are eligible, including those that have had previous readings or workshop presentations.

A selection committee of theatre professionals will review all eligible submissions. Three scripts will be chosen to participate in the 2026 Play Development Festival. Each selected playwright will work closely with a dramaturge and director to refine their script and present it to an engaged audience during the festival week. The festival also serves as a potential pipeline to full productions in Lighthouse’s summer seasons.

“As a company, we’re always looking ahead to what Canadian theatre can be,” adds Spence. “The Play Development Festival gives playwrights space to take creative risks and shape the future of comedic storytelling on our stages.”

Lighthouse Festival remains dedicated to fostering new Canadian work and championing the development of playwrights at all career stages. Past festivals have included emerging and established voices alike, and several featured scripts have gone on to full productions and publication.

Interested playwrights are encouraged to review the full submission guidelines at lighthousetheatre.com/play-development/play-development-festival/ and submit their script by the September 15, 2025 deadline

For Immediate Release: Lighthouse Festival is pleased to present its second production of the 2025 Summer Season, The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Written by Stephen Canny & John Nicholson, this cheeky British import is directed by Derek Ritschel and features a cast of three actors playing 17 different roles.

May 26, 2025 – Port Dover, ON | The game is afoot at Lighthouse Festival as The Hound of the Baskervilles takes the stage as the second production of the 2025 summer season. Running from June 18 to July 5 in Port Dover and July 9 to 20 in Port Colborne, this riotous adaptation of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle classic promises non-stop laughs, jaw-dropping transformations, and a spine-tingling mystery with a decidedly ridiculous twist.

Written by Steven Canny and John Nicholson, this brilliantly funny take on one of literature’s most iconic detective stories trades fog for farce as three actors take on over a dozen roles. Directed by Lighthouse Festival’s Director in Residence, Derek Ritschel, this production stars a powerhouse comedic trio: Jonathan Ellul, Sweeney Macarthur, and Andrew Scanlon.

Derek Ritschel, Director

“Theatre should entertain, surprise, and leave your cheeks sore from smiling, and this show delivers all three,” says director Derek Ritschel. “We’ve taken one of the greatest mysteries ever written and turned it into a night of organized chaos, breathless quick changes, and endless hilarity. These actors are fearless, and the audience is in for a howling good time.”

“Steve and I had a great time writing this adaptation – nearly 20 years ago now. It’s also been a pleasure to come back to the script almost every year since to update it, in response to new productions,” says playwright John Nicholson. “Since its West End run in London, the show has travelled all over the world, and we’re thrilled that it has now landed at Lighthouse Festival. We know you’re in for a good time!”

Jonathan Ellul, taking on the role of the infamous sidekick Watson, says “What I love about my character is that I get to be the ‘innocent’ in the story because Watson is always trying to figure out the next piece of the puzzle, but also, there is a lot of stepping in and out of character which, in our version, contrasts with everything about the ‘character I’m playing’.”

Andrew Scanlon

“I think anyone who is looking for a real escape is going to love this show; anyone looking for the opportunity to slip away into a world of mystery and intrigue and rollicking laughs, says Andrew Scanlon, who plays Sherlock Holmes. “I think fans of Sherlock Holmes will love this adaptation, which plays very cleverly with all the creepy twists and turns of the classic story. But if you’ve never seen a Holmes mystery in your life, this is the absolute perfect comedic entry point!”

From lightning-fast costume changes to laugh-out-loud dialogue and a few howls in the night, The Hound of the Baskervilles is the perfect blend of classic storytelling and madcap comedy. Whether you’re a die-hard Holmes fan or simply love a good laugh, this production is sure to be a highlight of your summer.

Tickets are available now at www.lighthousetheatre.com or by calling 1-888-779-7703.

Port Dover, ON – April 15, 2025 | Lighthouse Festival is pleased to announce it has received vital support from the Ontario Arts Council (OAC) to help bring its 2025 Summer Season to life in Port Dover and Port Colborne. This funding will directly support the production of five professional plays, helping Lighthouse continue its mission of delivering world-class comedy rooted in the Canadian experience.

Lighthouse Festival would also like to extend sincere thanks to Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady for her ongoing advocacy and support of the local arts sector. Her efforts were instrumental in helping secure this grant, which will have a meaningful impact on the theatre’s ability to engage local artists, employ production teams, and welcome thousands of patrons through its doors.

“There’s such an abundance of talent in rural and smaller communities, especially in Haldimand-Norfolk,” said Bobbi Ann Brady. “When funding is put to good use as it is for supporting the Lighthouse Theatre, the whole community benefits – both audiences and everyone involved in the productions. Congratulations!”

The Ontario Arts Council’s investment reflects a continued commitment to fostering creative communities and supporting organizations offering opportunities for artists and audiences across Ontario. Lighthouse’s summer season includes five plays, four of which are written by Canadian playwrights. These plays showcase various comedic themes and styles while creating professional opportunities for actors, directors, designers, and technicians.

“Government support for the arts is so much more than funding – it’s an investment in vibrant communities, local storytelling, and creative expression,” said Jane Spence, Lighthouse Festival’s Artistic Director. “Thanks to the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council, Lighthouse Festival is able to bring Canadian stories to life, create jobs, and continue building meaningful opportunities in our region’s economy.”

“We’re proud to be part of a thriving arts landscape in Ontario and deeply grateful for the OAC’s continued investment in what we do,” said Nicole Campbell, Executive Director at Lighthouse Festival. “We also want to give a special thanks to our local MPP, Bobbi Ann Brady, for her advocacy and tireless support of arts funding in our community.”

The 2025 season includes The New Canadian Curling Club by Mark Crawford, The Hound of the Baskervilles adapted by Steven Canny & John Nicholson, Hidden Treasures and Here on the Flight Path by Norm Foster, and Pinkerton Comes to Prospect, a world premiere written by Jamie Williams. It’s a celebration of great stories and incredible talent, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience it all.”

Cast Announcement

The cast for the five productions has been carefully selected to bring these stories to life. Highlights include:

  • The New Canadian Curling Club is a moving and comedic look at new Canadians finding their footing on the curling rink. It features Frank Chung as Mike Chang, Mahsa Ershadifar as Fatima, Chiamaka Glory as Charmaine Bailey, John Jarvis as Stuart McPhail, and Andrew Prashad as Anoopjeet Singh.
  • The Hound of the Baskervilles: A Sherlock favourite starring Jonathan Ellul as Watson, Sweeney Macarthur as Jason, and Andrew Scanlon as Javier/Sherlock, all of whom will play 17 different characters.
  • Hidden Treasures: Our special presentation of two Norm Foster-penned, one-act plays presented as a single production starring Jennifer Dzialoszynski as Lacy/Cassie, Melanie Janzen as Barb/Angel, David Leyshon as Miles/John, and Stephen Sparks as Bob/Doctor.
  • Pinkerton Comes to Prospect: The world premiere of Jamie Williams’ newest work will feature an exciting ensemble cast, including the Norfolk County talent of Ryan Bommarito as Herschel Penkerton, as well as Matt Olver as Doc, Adrian Shepherd-Gawinski as Amos, Jessica Sherman as Tallahassee Trigger, and Evelyn Wiebe as Lacy. • Here on the Flight Path: Examining one man’s relationship with three different women over several years, this Norm Foster classic is helmed by director Derek Ritschel and stars Julia Dyan as Fay, Angel and Gwen, and Reid Janisse as John.

Spence continues, “Each of these plays has been chosen for their ability to make us laugh and connect with one another, and I can’t wait to see the joy they bring to the stage. I’m so excited for this journey and look forward to celebrating the magic of live theatre with our patrons.”

Andrew Prashad

Cast Reactions

Andrew Prashad, who plays Anoopjeet Singh in The New Canadian Curling Club, shares, “On their way home, the audiences will hopefully be thinking about the jokes and humour, but also how showing empathy for other people who are different, is a good thing in helping us understand one another.” He continues, “I love that my character is an honest, hardworking person who is trying to bring a smile to other people’s faces while doing his best for his family.”

Frank Chung

Frank Chung, who portrays Mike Chang in The New Canadian Curling Club, adds, “I think audience members will be thinking a lot about what it truly means to be Canadian in an increasingly diverse world, but they will perhaps also think about how much it would cost to attend a Learn to Curl session!”

Mark Crawford

Mark Crawford, the playwright of The New Canadian Curling Club, explains, “This play originally premiered in 2018. Sitting here in 2025, it strikes me that a story about immigration, prejudice, and national identity is more relevant than ever. With threats to our sovereignty, many Canadians are taking a closer look at who we are and what we stand for. Lots of us are experiencing a renewed sense of patriotism. (Elbows up!) But despite all her great qualities, Canada isn’t perfect. As a theatre-maker, though, that’s the good stuff: conflict! I’m excited for you to meet these characters as they learn to curl, face challenges in a new land, and attempt to change and grow.” He continues, “I hope The New Canadian Curling Club tickles your funny bone. I also hope it makes you reflect on this great country we call home. Thanks for supporting Canadian culture. Enjoy the show. Hurry hard!”

Sweeney MacArthur

Sweeney MacArthur, who plays Jason in The Hound of the Baskervilles, says, “I think the type of person that is going to love this show is the type of person that uses a funny voice to talk to their pets at home, then uses a different funny voice to answer!” He adds, “What I love most about my character in this show is there’s a dozen of them!”

This summer, Lighthouse Festival continues its legacy of offering funny, captivating, world-class performances in lakeside Port Dover and Port Colborne. The 2025 Summer Season promises to deliver unforgettable theatre moments, and the team is eager to welcome audiences back for another year of exceptional comedy.

Lighthouse Festival invites you to join us in celebrating the mixed media artwork of artist JC Lee

Please join us as we unveil the mixed media artwork of Norfolk County & Hamilton artist JC Lee that will hang in the box office lobby for the 2025 season at Lighthouse Festival Theatre in Port Dover. Champagne and light refreshments will be served and JC’s artwork will be for sale.

When: Sunday, March 23rd | 2 PM to 4 PM

Where: Lighthouse Festival Theatre – Box Office Lobby | 247 Main Street, Port Dover ON

JC Lee is a Norfolk County/Hamilton, Ontario artist creating contemporary textured paintings of landscapes and nature with hints of fantasy!

His passion for art started during his childhood in Malaysia where he learned the basics of painting using watercolour.  After a long hiatus from painting as other life pursuits including moving to Canada became a priority, JC’s passion for art was rekindled by the beauty of the varied landscapes and wildlife in Norfolk County, Ontario while vacationing in Turkey Point.  He now splits his creative time between his Turkey Point cottage and Hamilton home, where he lives with his husband and two dogs while maintaining a tech job in the IT industry.

JC taught himself techniques of oil and mixed media painting.  He paints with a distinct personal style, creating a combination of textures with a variety of mixed media, especially mica powder, and blending with richly coloured oil paints to capture his inspirations, infusing them with emotion and magic on the canvas.  His artworks paint stories in the vein of Magical Realism – rooted in realism but enchanted with fantastical elements and perspectives.

Artist Statement

“I draw inspiration from the diverse Canadian landscapes and natural environments, then combine my own life experiences and feelings to create stories through my paintings with a touch of fantasy.

My artworks are set in reality but I intensify magical elements in nature through juxtaposition of colours, textures, patterns, composition and perspectives.  I bring my detail oriented personality into my paintings, as a result, my work often feature highly defined textured foreground for an almost 3D effect and a detailed background. Transformative play of light, symbolism and metaphors are also recurring components of my paintings. Due to the variety of textured and shimmering media, many of my paintings are best appreciated in person.”

Please note tickets are not required to attend this opening reception as this is a drop in event.

Simcoe Little Theatre presents Art as the second production of the 2024/25 Season

Tony-Award Winning Play, written by Yasmina Reza & directed by Courtney Deelen, will be on stage at Simcoe Little Theatre from March sixth through 16th and features a cast of local acting luminaries.

Simcoe, ON – January 7, 2025 – Simcoe Little Theatre is thrilled to announce that Yasmina Reza’s celebrated play, Art, will grace the stage from March sixth to 16th, 2025. This razor-sharp comedy, directed by Courtney Deelen, explores the complexities of friendship through wit, humour, and thought-provoking dialogue.

Winner of the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play, Art is a timeless exploration of how personal taste and perspective can challenge the bonds we hold most dear. The story begins with Serge, played by Matt McGregor, purchasing an expensive piece of modern art: an all-white painting. This decision sparks an uproar among his closest friends, Marc (played by Dave Deelen) and Yvan (played by Randy McGivern), leading to hilarious yet poignant confrontations that test their decades-long friendship. As tensions rise, the trio must grapple with questions of loyalty, honesty, and what it truly means to be a friend.

Director Courtney Deelen, known for her dynamic approach to theatrical productions, shares her thoughts about bringing Art to Norfolk County audiences: “Do their reactions to this provocative canvas mirror more dangerous perceptions of their longtime friendship? The matter of personal relationships, outlooks of life, loved ones and family also strategically weave throughout this play. Art is a look at how vastly different perspectives and opinions can challenge even the closest of friendships.”

Deelen further explains the play’s enduring appeal: “It all begins with a piece of art. Or “art” according to at least one of our heroes. This play is a quirky, fun, feel-good play with substance. It follows 3 friends, played by Matt McGregor (Serge), Dave Deelen (Marc), and Randy McGivern (Yvan) and the question; is it really art or is it not?”

Featuring a stellar cast, Art promises to be an unmissable theatrical event. Matt McGregor’s portrayal of Serge promises depth and charm to the art enthusiast whose purchase sets the story in motion. Dave Deelen’s Marc will deliver sharp wit and a commanding presence, while Randy McGivern’s Yvan will add a dose of comedic brilliance with his chaotic and endearing personality.

Performances will run at Simcoe Little Theatre from March sixth to 16th, 2025, with evening and matinee shows available. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at simcoelittletheatre.org or by calling the box office at (519) 583-0505.

Join us for an unforgettable exploration of friendship, art, and the ties that bind us. Secure your tickets early – this is one production you won’t want to miss!

Randy McGivern as Yvan
Dave Deelen as Marc
Matt McGregor as Serge

Simcoe Little Theatre announces auditions for Jessica’s Fine Adventure

Jessica Quartermaine: 69 years old. Married for 31 years in a relationship characterized by emotional restraint and lack of passion. Has lived alone since her husband’s untimely demise 19 years ago. Feeling she has never really lived, she is determined to find a way to step out into life and experience – in her words – “the euphoria of sweet intimacy”.

Charlie Quartermaine: Jessica’s son, 35 years old, an accountant, very by the book. At play’s beginning, uptight at pretty well everything, can’t say the word ‘sex’ out loud. Married seven years to Veronica, who is as uptight as he is. At play’s end, however, Charlie is quite different. Seeing the transformation of his mother into a vibrant and courageous person, he is ready to open up and take a chance on life and love.

Alessandro Corelli: Suitable Suitor One – 65, a fashion model in Rome. With long Fabio like hair cascading down to his shoulders, he radiates a relaxed and vibrant sexuality, and is possessed of a generous and kind disposition. Edward Stills: Suitable Suitor Two – 43, a librarian who has never kissed a girl. A sweet soul, totally unconfident and socially awkward, he has lived his life through books. Jock MacTeague: Suitable Suitor Three – 71, a raucous, larger than life personality with a zest for everything and a great sense of humour. September 4, 2024 | Port Dover, ON – Lighthouse Festival is thrilled to announce its season topper, Memphis to Motown: From Soulsville to Hitsville, a sensational live concert experience from the creator of the 2022 smash hit Glory Days, Chris McHarge. This highly anticipated show brings the electrifying sounds of two of America’s most influential musical cities – Memphis & Detroit – to the stage, featuring an incredible lineup of legendary artists.

From the soulful grooves of Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Isaac Hayes to the unforgettable harmonies of The Staple Singers, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Four Tops, and more, Memphis to Motown is set to captivate audiences with its dynamic performances. “It feels so good to be back at Lighthouse, my creative home and base for so many years, and I’m thrilled to bring Memphis to Motown: from Soulsville to Hitsville to you,” says Chris McHarge, the creative force behind the show. “The inspiration for creating this show goes back decades for me. With Rhythm & Blues, everyone always thinks Motown in the 60s, but there was another studio making the most amazing music at the same time: Stax in Memphis – known as Soulsville, USA.”

McHarge, known for his innovative approach to live concerts, has crafted a show that not only pays homage to these iconic artists but also brings their music to life in a fresh and engaging way. The goal is to transport the audience back in time to the golden age of soul and Motown. “We want them to feel as if they’re experiencing these songs for the first time, all over again,” says McHarge.

The concert’s setlist includes timeless classics and lesser-known gems, ensuring there’s something for everyone. McHarge has carefully curated a selection of songs that showcase the breadth and depth of talent that emerged from Memphis and Detroit during this incredible era of music. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of soul and Motown or discovering these tunes for the first time, there’s an energy and emotion in every performance that’s truly special.

Lighthouse Festival’s outgoing Artistic Director, Derek Ritschel, is equally enthusiastic about the upcoming show. “Chris McHarge has a unique ability to connect with audiences through music,” says Ritschel. “His passion and vision for Memphis to Motown: from Soulsville to Hitsville align perfectly with our commitment to providing top-quality entertainment. We’re excited to bring this blockbuster production to our community and can’t wait for audiences to experience the thrill of these unforgettable performances.”

Memphis to Motown: from Soulsville to Hitsville is more than just a concert; it’s a celebration of the music that defined a generation. With its powerful performances and engaging storytelling, this show is set to be an amazing way to top off Lighthouse Festival’s 2024 summer season.

For Immediate Release: Lighthouse Festival announces their 2025 Summer Season with productions curated by incoming Artistic Director Jane Spence

Upcoming season is strongly focused on laughter with hints of mystery, adventures by new Canadians, and western themes.

Lighthouse Festival is thrilled to announce its highly anticipated 2025 summer season, featuring a dynamic lineup of productions that promise to entertain, engage, and bring plenty of laughter to audiences. The new season will showcase a delightful mix of comedy, mystery, and heartwarming stories, all carefully selected to offer something special for every theatre lover.

The 2025 season will include the following productions:

  • The New Canadian Curling Club by Mark Crawford
  • The Hound of the Baskervilles by Steven Canny & John Nicholson
  • Hidden Treasures by Norm Foster
  • Pinkerton comes to Prospect by Jamie Williams
  • Here On the Flight Path by Norm Foster

Taking the helm for her inaugural season is incoming Artistic Director Jane Spence, who brings a wealth of experience, enthusiasm, and a deep love for the arts to Lighthouse Festival.

“I am absolutely thrilled to join Lighthouse Festival as the new Artistic Director,” says Spence. “This theatre has a rich history of bringing exceptional performances to our communities, and I can’t wait to be a part of that tradition. Our 2025 season is focused on making people laugh, and I believe that laughter is a universal language that brings us together, helps us find joy, and creates unforgettable memories.”

Incoming Artistic Direct of Lighthouse Festival, Jane Spence.

The season will open with Mark Crawford’s The New Canadian Curling Club, a heartwarming and humorous story about an unlikely group of characters coming together to overcome adversity, band together as a team, and learn the art of curling. This play is a celebration of Canada’s multicultural spirit and small-town communities, perfectly capturing the heart and humour that Canadian audiences love.

Next, audiences will be treated to a hilarious and inventive adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic mystery, The Hound of the Baskervilles. Written by Steven Canny & John Nicholson, this fast-paced, farcical take on the Sherlock Holmes mystery is sure to keep everyone on the edge of their seats while delivering plenty of laughs.

The season continues with Norm Foster’s Hidden Treasures, a special presentation that is a unique and thrilling theatre experience – two Norm Foster plays back-to-back! Each act is a one-act play by this renowned Canadian playwright. During intermission the cast and set seamlessly transition from one play to the next. For Act One, My Narrator asks you to imagine what would happen if that little voice inside your head – the one that tells you how to behave and what choices to make – suddenly took on a life of its own? For Lacy and Miles, love is what happens, and with hilarious results. In Act Two, The Death of Me sees John bargain with the Angel of Death for a second chance at life. He quickly discovers that fixing the mistakes of your past is difficult, and that perhaps his destiny is not yet etched in stone.

Jamie Williams’ world premiere of Pinkerton comes to Prospect is a western-themed comedy that takes mistaken identities and six shooters to a new level! Follow along as young surveyor Herchel Penkerten is unwittingly dragged into his new town’s sordid past. Complicating the whole mess is Doc and Amos, who are just trying to save their own necks. Will Herchel win the heart of Miss Lacey, or will he end up hanging from a tree? And who’s to say which option is better!

Rounding out the season is another Norm Foster classic, Here On The Flight Path. This play, a comedic exploration of love, life, and the quirky characters who inhabit a Toronto apartment building, is a perfect example of Foster’s talent for capturing the humour in everyday life.

“I believe that theatre is a place where we can come together to laugh and experience something truly special,” says Spence. “This season is all about connection and community, and I can’t wait to see everyone in the theatre, sharing in these wonderful stories.”

Spence’s vision for the 2025 summer season is rooted in her passion for creating experiences that resonate with audiences long after the lights have come up. With a dynamic selection of plays, the season promises to deliver a memorable summer filled with laughter, joy, and a few surprises along the way.

Single tickets for the 2025 summer season will be on sale November 18th, with subscription renewals underway in early September. For more information, visit www.lighthousetheatre.com or contact the box office at (888) 779-7703.
